22 November 2023
In the 2023-2024 academic year, 500 international students from 84 countries in Africa, America, Asia and Europe are studying at Transilvania University of Brașov. They are joined by another 90 students, only in the first semester, the latter having chosen UNITBV as their destination for a study mobility within the Erasmus+ programme.
In recent years, Transilvania University of Brașov has understood that internationalization is a strategic tool for increasing the quality of its academic processes, as well as of its visibility; and it gradually implemented a strategy to develop its international dimension. The results did not take long to appear: in the last 4 years alone, the number of international students increased by more than 50%.
One of its significant self-promotion ways internationally has been the intensifying collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with Romania’s diplomatic missions abroad, for the development of joint educational, research or technical-assistance projects, aimed at promoting the Romanian language, culture and civilization. This collaboration underpinned a coherent strategy to attract international students from developing countries, which has fully proven its viability.
Through Transilvania Academica Scholarship programme, fully funded by UNITBV, the institution attracts high-performing young people from outside the European area to study, thus forming, over time, a group of “ambassadors” who contribute to increasing its visibility at the international level. Some of the scholarship grantees choose to continue with their doctoral degree studies still within UNITBV.
The academic personnel have always been considered the key factor in developing the international dimension of the university. In order to increase the quality of the educational act, the participation in international mobility and cooperation activities was boosted, both within the Erasmus+ programme (about 200 mobilities per year) and within other international and national programmes and projects. Moreover, the university has made available to each member of the teaching personnel annual funds worth 1000 euros for their travels to international educational and scientific events, or in the interest of education.
The most recent acknowledgement of the efforts made by Transilvania University of Brașov towards internationalization is its acceptance as a full-fledged member of the UNITA European University Alliance, together with nine other prestigious universities from Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Romania.
UNITBV sets out to continue its policy of opening up internationally, adding other measures and actions aimed at strengthening and expanding collaboration with universities in Europe and all over the world.
